The bulletin does not say where the trap was located. A positive mosquito pool is not a human case. OPH says there have been no confirmed or probable human cases of West Nile virus reported in Ottawa this year, and that two human cases had been reported in Ontario as of Sunday, July 26. Most people who are infected develop no symptoms at all. OPH says about 20 per cent may get flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches and possibly a rash, usually two to fourteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Fewer than one per cent of infections lead to very serious illness in which the virus invades the central nervous system. That risk is higher for people with weakened immune systems and increases with age. OPH asks residents to apply a Health Canada approved repellent containing DEET or icaridin to exposed skin and clothing, following the manufacturer's instructions, and to take particular care between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and at any time in or near shady, bushy or wooded areas. It also advises light-coloured, loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing including long pants, long sleeves, shoes and socks, and window and door screens that fit well and are in good condition. Around the house, OPH asks residents to remove or regularly refresh anything that holds water for seven days or longer, including bird baths, flowerpot saucers, toys, buckets, cans, old tires, wheelbarrows and swimming pool covers, and to keep all rain barrel openings covered with tightly fitted screen mesh. Mosquitoes can pose a risk of infection until the first hard frosts of the fall, so OPH says the risk does not end when the weather starts to cool. At its July 15 meeting, City Council approved a motion from Barrhaven West Councillor David Hill, seconded by Councillor Riley Brockington, to commemoratively rename Cobble Hill Park, at 200 Cobble Hill Drive, as Crossing Guard Park. In a video announcement on his Facebook page, Hill said the vote was unanimous and that a memorial plaque is planned for the park in Mr. Clark's honour. Peter Clark, 55, died in March after being struck while on duty at the crossing at Cedarview Road and Kennevale Drive, near Mary Honeywell Elementary School. The park that will carry the crossing guards' name sits about a block from his corner. The motion frames the renaming as a tribute not only to Mr. Clark but to all crossing guards who stand at intersections each day to protect children, families and neighbourhoods. The neighbourhood has been carrying his memory since the spring. Flags at City facilities flew at half-mast in the days after his death, and in early May hundreds of neighbours, parents and children gathered at a vigil remembering the man CTV News called the crossing guard with the friendly smile, a fixture families relied on every school morning. The studio, part of the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, runs two three-hour classes every weekday, painting, cooking and hundreds of other disciplines, for people 16 and older. Rosemarie Ferguson, who runs the studio, told the Citizen it operates without grants or dedicated funding, on the work of herself, two employees and volunteers. She is paid for 35 hours a week and works closer to 60. Because the studio cannot offer direct billing, classes can cost families hundreds of dollars up front, a real barrier for participants whose support comes through the Ontario Disability Support Program. What makes the place matter is choice. Customers choose to spend their time there, Ferguson told the Citizen, which is special for people who may not get a lot of choice elsewhere in their lives. One regular, celebrating her 64th birthday at the studio, put it simply: she likes to get out of the apartment, and she keeps every painting she makes. The community has already stepped in once. Students from St. Paul High School's Elite Skilled Trades Academy, working with the carpenters' union Local 93, built the studio's accessible garden this school year: raised planters reachable from a wheelchair, and picnic tables with wheelchair spaces in the middle rather than bolted on at the ends. The garden is year two of a five-year accessibility plan, and its onions are already part of the programming. For Barrhaven and South Nepean families supporting an adult with a developmental disability, the studio is one of the few programs of its kind in the west end. Eligible residents can apply online or call 3-1-1, and the City says application volumes have risen sharply, that staff will contact applicants with a status update within ten business days of receipt, and that residents should not resubmit an application because that slows the review. - The Province has activated Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians in parts of Ottawa for the July 1 flooding, with an application deadline of Monday, November 16, 2026, and the program covers damage from flooding out of lakes, rivers and creeks that insurance does not cover. Ontario lists the Ottawa activation area as Graham Creek and Stillwater Creek, so most Barrhaven and South Nepean addresses fall outside it, and residents should confirm they are in the activation area before counting on that program. The Ottawa Business Journal reports the mix is 448 single-detached homes, 396 townhouses and 98 back-to-back townhouses, built as an expansion of the existing Quinn’s Pointe community. Plans filed with the City include a stormwater management pond, a retained woodlot, and a 2.27-hectare neighbourhood park created by combining the new municipal park with the existing Pointe Park. The Ottawa Business Journal reports the work is proposed in three phases starting at the north end and moving south toward Barnsdale Road, with the park and the stormwater pond in the first phase. The City says donated furniture is limited, so assistance will be prioritized for eligible households with the greatest financial need, including residents whose beds, couches and other essential furnishings were damaged or destroyed and who may face financial or other barriers to replacing them. The City says it will follow up with people already identified through wellness visits and service requests, and that residents who have not been contacted but need furniture assistance because of the July 1 event are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to inquire and have their needs assessed.
